“If you’re serious about photography, Carolyn, we need to move to New York City”…

And with that, we packed our belongings and drove across the country from San Francisco to Brooklyn back in 2007.

Now, almost 5 years later, I am so excited and proud to announce the launch of my new website carolynclementphotography.com. Over the past several years, I have been given incredible opportunities: From those who hired me without experience; who gave me internships when the competition was so stiff; to my peers who allowed me to fetch coffee and sweep floors for them for the chance to discover new lighting techniques. I thank you all on a professional and personal level for helping me achieve this milestone.

It hasn’t always been easy; I’ve worked my butt off to get to this point. But what I’ve discovered is that the time and effort you put into something eventually rewards you, often when you least expect it.

And so, as excited (and anxious) as I am today to be making my work public, I cannot wait to see where I’ll be in another 5 years…

It is always such a pleasure to photograph a beautiful pregnant woman…it’s even better when she’s a dear friend. Natalie is due to have her 2nd child on May 8th and it’s still unknown whether it is a baby boy or girl. If Natalie’s son, Chase, has it his way, it’ll be a little sister that makes her appearance!

I met Natalie when I first moved to Weehawken (literally, the very first morning I woke up in my new neighborhood) and we hit it off instantly. Ever since that morning, she’s become a great source of encouragement and support, something that is now crucial in my life as a new mama. She has a lot of wonderful advice to give and I know that she would drop everything to help out a friend in need. I’m so glad we met.

I cannot wait to meet her new addition…only a few more weeks!

Just wanted to share a few photos from my last maternity shoot with my client, Misha. We had a wonderful time, shot in her apartment with her husband and I’m very pleased with the results.

It’s great to be able to relate to my clients now…instead of simply being in awe of the whole life-creating process we call pregnancy 🙂 I love being a part of such a special time in a woman’s life and can’t foresee that feeling ever going away. I guess that’s how I know I’m doing what I love…

I’m Pregnant!

I’m a little disappointed in myself and my lack of posting over the last few months. However, I guess I have a *little* excuse: I am expecting my very own little bundle of joy! And it’s surprising how much time one can spend daydreaming about the future, researching every little item that the wee one will be using, and enjoying life as it is before the BIG change.

Our little man is due on December 25, 2010. What a present! That means that I have 2 months left of this pregnancy and I plan on taking it one day at a time. I’m trying not to get too caught up in counting down the days/weeks until Elliott’s arrival…Instead, I’m appreciating every little kick to the ribs, knowing that I will only have the experience of being pregnant for the 1st time once in my life.

A warning for my baby: he won’t be able to escape the lens of my camera! What a wonderful opportunity to have a live-in model 😉

Jon and I went on our Babymoon (great excuse to have some alone time!) back in September and my gorgeous husband took this picture of me, I was 27 weeks pregnant…Thanks babe! xoxo

On a gorgeous day in Spring, I met with Jillian and John in Central Park to spend a few hours taking photos. Jillian, who is due at the end of June, is a great friend of Colleen‘s; how special that their children will be born only 1 month apart.

When we had first discussed the location, John had mentioned that it would be nice to shoot something near the Bethesda Fountain. Unfortunately, when my husband and I went to the park the previous week to scout other possibilities, we discovered that the fountain was undergoing a few renovations…

We had a lovely afternoon, stopping here and there. I did learn a valuable lesson – it can prove to be challenging for a mama-to-be to spend a day in a park, especially when that park is in full bloom! Achoo!

Looking forward to meeting the newest addition xoxo

Colleen- Gorgeous!

Proud Parents-to-be

Beautiful - Inside & Out

How do you make pregnancy look so good?

It all started a few months ago…I’ve worked with Sean in Suite 201 for over 2 years and one day he mentioned that he and his lovely wife, Colleen, were expecting their first child. This was announced at the very moment that I was building up the courage to not just talk about wanting to photograph pregnant women – I wanted to do it. It seemed like a safe place to be: Sean and Colleen are both photographers, they would understand my lack of experience and be dazzled by my eagerness to learn.

Colleen and I began exchanging emails, both offering ideas of what we thought the final product should look like. This process was a very big learning experience. Colleen pushed me to think outside of what was safe, conventional…maybe even boring? From those emails, I can say that my entire vision has been affected. When I become the photographer that I dream of becoming, I will have Colleen to thank for pushing me further than I was willing to push.

We shot this past Saturday for a few hours and several set changes. Sean was there and he offered his assistance when I asked (he also knows exactly what to say to his wife to make her smile!) but he never made me feel like I was in desperate need of guidance. I think sometimes we don’t give ourselves the credit we deserve and that it a huge lesson for me.

Colleen and Sean, I don’t know if you realize how blessed I feel to have been part of this experience. I cannot thank you enough. As for the shots we got, I think they speak for themselves…Colleen is simply stunning! I can’t wait to meet your little boy…

Dominique & Her Angel

Dominique & Aeran

Looking Sassy!

Ok! I did it! I admit, I had a bit of anxiety leading up to our shoot last Sunday – I even had a nightmare the night before where everything that could go wrong, did. Now looking back, I can say that I had nothing to worry about…our shoot was a complete success and it even surpassed my expectations. It didn’t hurt that we were able to make all of this happen in Suite 201, a 3 300square ft fully equipped studio located in Chelsea, New York.

Our model for the day was Dominique and I still can’t believe that she’s 8 months pregnant (35 weeks so be precise). Dominique and her husband, Aeran, are expecting a little girl in a few short weeks. She and I met just over 2 years ago through a mutual friend. Dominique knew that I was working towards a career shooting Maternity & Babies/Children, so it worked out perfectly that she was comfortable enough to sit in front of the camera for the 4 hours and 3 set changes.

I was also fortunate to have a very talented and professional hair and makeup artist, Mayra, working with us throughout the shoot. I have worked with Mayra on a number of occasions while assisting Jason Groupp and her work is always impeccable, this time was no exception.

Though there are a few things that I would have done differently (maybe not so late into the pregnancy, found something soft to put under Dominique’s poor knees while she was kneeling on the concrete!), all in all, I’m very proud of myself and the final results. Dominique called today to thank me (after already sending me a hand-written Thank You card) and that means the world to me. I’m so honored to have had the chance to capture such a beautiful moment in her and Aeran’s life. So THANK YOU Dominique, the pleasure was all mine 😉

I can’t wait to meet the little angel~
